Seat

Master of Interior Design, RMIT University
Year: 2025

Developed from our collaborative article, this project translates ideas of movement, gesture, and form into an interconnected object. Inspired by hand movement and the marks created through kerf-cut wood, we focused on three actions; marking, gliding, and bending, expressed through a performative chair where the seat becomes the focal point and the frame follows the path of movement.

Through material exploration and testing, the form continued to evolve, balancing flexibility, strength, and stability. The final outcome became a chair shaped by gesture, experimentation, and the relationship between movement and material.

Through iterative prototyping across different forms, scales, and user capacities, the design was refined into a single-user chair defined by a curved, oval-based geometry.

The final form emphasizes continuity, fluidity, and motion, with the enveloping frame and contoured seat working together to guide bodily engagement.

Experimental, playful, and performative, the chair explores the relationship between structure, form, and user interaction.
